How to create a Grok Bot

Aug 30, 2026 · Free to read

A useful Grok Bot starts with one durable job, not a broad personality. Give it a short name, one primary outcome, the sources or tools it may use, the result it should return, and the actions that must wait for your approval.

Evidence note. This is a source-backed setup checklist. Bot Store has not yet added a dated hands-on walkthrough with screenshots.

1. Create the Bot

Open Grok Bot, choose New, then Create new agent. The official xAI Bot guide says you can then open Bot actions and edit its name, title, description, and avatar.

2. Write the job as an outcome

Avoid “general helper.” State what the Bot owns, what a finished result looks like, and how often the work happens. A good description is: “Review new support issues every weekday, group repeated problems, cite each ticket, and return the three product decisions that need attention.”

3. Add boundaries before access

  • Name the accounts, folders, websites, or connectors it may use.
  • Start with read-only access where possible.
  • Require approval before sending, publishing, buying, deleting, changing permissions, or touching production.
  • Tell it what to do when data is missing or stale.

The xAI approval guide recommends explicit boundaries for consequential actions and narrow approval rules around known targets.

4. Give it one real task

Use a small, observable job with safe data. Ask for source links, a clear output format, and an explicit list of anything it could not verify. Review the result and correct durable preferences in the Bot description rather than burying them in one conversation.

5. Turn a proven process into a routine

Only automate after the one-time task works twice. The official skills and routines guide recommends defining inputs, failure handling, expected output, and approval boundaries before scheduling work.

Simple rule. Create one Bot per stable area of ownership, add another only when the job, tools, or approval boundary is genuinely different.

When the Bot is useful and safe to copy, follow the public sharing checklist before listing it.
