> **Direct answer:** Do not reset first. Choose **Recover computer** if it is offered, otherwise open **Settings → Computer** and choose **Update Bot's Computer**. Both keep your files and logins. Use **Reset** only if those fail: it goes back to the last saved copy. Your conversations survive either way.

These steps follow xAI's [troubleshooting guide](https://docs.x.ai/grok-bot/troubleshooting), checked on October 27, 2026.

## Recover, update, or reset: what is the difference?

- **Recover computer:** offered when the computer cannot be reached. The confirmation says **Recover Grok Bot's Computer**. Keeps files and logins.
- **Update Bot's Computer:** in **Settings → Computer**. Rebuilds the cloud computer and keeps files and logins, but removes apps and packages installed on it.
- **Reset Bot's Computer:** also in **Settings → Computer**, under **Bot's computer**. Goes back to the last saved copy of the computer.

Recover and Reset both rebuild from the last saved copy. If the computer could not be reached to save first, very recent changes may not come back.

Updating the desktop app is a different thing. It does not reset the cloud computer.

## How do I reset Grok Bot?

Work down this list and stop as soon as one works:

- Choose **Retry**, or reopen the conversation.
- Restart the Grok Bot app.
- Choose **Recover computer** if it appears.
- Open **Settings → Computer** and choose **Update Bot's Computer**.
- Wait for the new computer to finish starting.
- Only then use **Settings → Computer → Reset Bot's Computer**, and only if you accept losing recent unsaved work.

Before you reset, write down what the Bot last did. If it was partway through sending or changing something, check whether that already happened so you do not do it twice.

## How do I reset Grok Bot on iPhone or Android?

Open **Settings → Bot → Bot Computer** and choose **Reset Computer**. xAI's guide does not list Recover or Update on the phone apps, so try those from the desktop app first if you can.

## What does grokbot://app/v1/settings?id=reset-computer open?

It opens the reset screen inside the Grok Bot app. It is an app link, so a browser or Google search cannot open it. The same pattern covers `update-computer` and `computers`. Read [what a grokbot:// link opens](/academy/how-to-add-a-shared-grok-bot-template) for each one.

## Does resetting delete my Bots?

No. Reset is for the cloud computer. xAI says conversations are stored outside the computer, so they survive a reset. Deleting a Bot is a separate action, and xAI says files and logins on the shared computer may stay after a Bot is deleted.

## It still does not work after a reset

Restart the app and check for an app update. If the problem lasts, keep a note of the exact error, the app version, and what you tried, and send it through xAI's support route. [Grok Bot not working](/academy/grok-bot-troubleshooting) covers sign-in, routines, and usage limits.
